I love guiding people to write a meaningful personal life story. The process is simple, but not easy. What resources are available and where do you find them? I review 2-3 relevant books each month to save you time and energy and use these recommendations to grow, make a difference, and live a life that matters. All of these books are on audio ready to turn your commute or workout into a self-improvement adventure! Phil Stutz and Barry Michels are experienced psychologists that identify 5 tools to Transform Your Problems Into Courage, Confidence, and Creativity: 1)Reversal of desire, 2) Active love, 3) Inner authority, 4) The grateful flow, and 5) Jeopardy. The tools serve as practical guidelines that can immediately be implemented to overcome emotional baggage we all have to one degree or another. Their approach is inclusive of a metaphysical component, so depending on your worldview, tolerance is needed to adapt what is not compatible with your beliefs. I found the recommended interventions easy to understand, effective, and sensed in the authors a heart-felt desire to help people. MORE….

Authors Ian Morgan Cron & Suzanne Stabile do a great job of helping us understand self-awareness through an ancient personality typing system. The Enneagram has an uncanny accuracy in describing how human beings are wired, both positively and negatively. Learning about the positives is fun, but what you don’t know about yourself can hurt you and your relationships. Do you want help figuring out who you are and why you’re stuck in the same ruts?  The Road Back to You is a unique approach―a practical, comprehensive way of accessing Enneagram wisdom from a Christian worldview perspective that revealed some more pieces of my personal dysfunctions. I highly recommend the book as another step in the journey of understanding yourself and others. MORE….

E-Myth

The E-Myth Revisited: Whether you are just starting or already have a small business, this is a must read. I restructured my whole business as a result of reading this book. I think the audio, read by the author, is better than the book because Michael’s exuberance really drives home the ideas.

   Platform-Hyatt

Platform: Want to get through all the confusion about your website and how to promote yourself? This is the best guideline I’ve found for a clear and concise step-by-step process to establish a business presence otherwise known as your platform.

TheElement

  • The Element: Did you know – 1) Richard Branson is dyslexic and dropped out of school at the age of 16? 2) Julia Child published Mastering the Art of French Cooking at nearly 50? & 3) Matt Groening, the creator of the Simpsons, was told as a young person that he needed to pursue a real career because he was always drawing cartoons? The Element is filled with hope giving stories that pursuing your passion will drive you to do great things, get paid for it, and have fun in the process!

ChangeAnything

Change Anything: Did you know change is not a result of will power as much as it is having a great plan? Joseph Grenny and his colleagues used valid and reliable research to develop the best step-by-step guide I’ve read to bringing about realistic and long lasting change.

MindsetDweck

Mindset: Having a growth mindset is a critical component of becoming the person you were destined to be. I based a lot of my PhD dissertation concepts on Dr. Carol Dweck’s years of valid and reliable research. An added benefit is Dr. Dweck’s writing is easy to understand and can be applied to everyday life.

FlourishSeligman

Flourish: An intriguing book written by the father of positive psychology Martin E. P. Seligman. Dr. Seligman shifts the “old school” psychology of dwelling on problems to focusing on what a person is doing right. Hope is given to those who have had an onslaught of psychological challenges either personally or with those they care about.

PredictablyIrrational

Predictably Irrational: Think you understand and are making good choices because of your knowledge, wisdom, and sound judgment? Think again because Dan Ariely’s research reveals how illogical our choices are. The positive side of this is becoming aware of how decisions are emotionally rooted. Once acknowledging this, steps can be taken to base important decisions more on fact than emotion.

DaringGreatlyBrene

Daring Greatly: If you want to make those hidden hangups go away that you can’t quite figure out how to deal with, this is a great book. Brene has done extensive research on shame and vulnerability and how these are the source of a lot of dysfunctional thinking that occurs in our minds. Filled with easy to understand examples and explanations of the research, Brene makes this a very informative, yet enjoyable read.

NowHabitNeilFiore

The Now Habit: Talk about major breakthroughs for this procrastinator (ME)! Highly recommended to dig deep and understand that procrastination is only a symptom that is fed by things such as fear, self-criticism, and perfectionism. Once these “hidden” goblins are revealed, amazing changes for the good can take place!

LoveLanguagesChapman

The 5 Love Languages: Want to take relationships to the next level? Discover which of these most communicate love to you: words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time, or physical touch. A must read!
